Pardon Me Film Discussion Guide

This guide supports screenings of Pardon Me, a documentary film by Shuja Moore that centers on the stories of individuals impacted by incarceration and the pardon process. The guide is distributed to university classes and organizations to help viewers reflect, discuss, and engage with the film’s themes.

Design Process

  • The original version of the guide was difficult to navigate, with inconsistent layout, dense text blocks, and low visual hierarchy. As a result, readers were overwhelmed, and educators had a harder time using it as a facilitation tool.
I was asked to redesign the guide to:

    • Improve readability and flow

    • Visually reflect the tone and depth of the film

    • Make the material more inviting and useful for students and educators alike

    • Conducted a UX-style audit of the original file, identifying layout, legibility, and accessibility issues

    • Defined content groupings and applied a new typographic hierarchy

    • Introduced a consistent, spacious layout to reduce cognitive load

    • Added visual framing to highlight key quotes, terms, and discussion prompts

    • Selected colors and fonts that evoke seriousness without being harsh, keeping trauma-informed design in mind

  • A professionally designed 22-page viewing guide that is:

    • Intentionally paced to match the emotional intensity of the film

    • Organized with clear sections for pre-viewing, during viewing, and post-viewing reflection

    • Formatted for easy use both digitally and in print

    • Consistent in tone, structure, and visual hierarchy

    • The redesigned guide is now distributed as the default companion to the film for educators, students, and community groups

    • Educators reported it was “much easier to teach from” and allowed for more thoughtful group facilitation

    • Helped reinforce the film’s impact by supporting sustained, structured engagement

  • If brought in earlier, I would have collaborated on the content strategy itself, helping define the learning outcomes, activity structure, and alignment with justice-centered pedagogy. I’d also love to see this resource evolve into a digital, interactive format in the future.
